Abstract:
In the framework of J. P. Gee's notion of cultural models, the joint construction, validation, & hybridization of cultural models is investigated in an analysis of discursive interactions among teacher, aide, & students within a sheltered high-school civics class in which all students are on a continuum of learning English as a second language & an aide translates into Hmong & Lao, the dominant languages of most of the students (N unspecified). Five representative discourse excerpts on the general topic of consumerism are presented with commentary showing that the teacher & aide construct a gender-stereotyped consumer identity for the students that is largely without agency & easily manipulated; although the students take few turns, some of the female students express resistance to the identity being constructed. Ethnic & language boundaries are superseded by engagement with popular culture, & the latter is argued to have a role in teacher-student discourse. 1 Appendix, 34 References. J. Hitchcock
