English

Hmong Studies Citations is an index of Hmong Studies publications from 1975 to 2018. Hmong Studies commits itself to studying HMoob subjectivities from a variety of disciplines (I use the spelling “HMoob” to honor Moob Ntsuab and Hmoob Dawb dialects. I do not change the spelling of organizations/bodies/persons that use the spelling “Hmong,” such as Hmong Studies Journal or Hmong Studies). Therefore, as a multidisciplinary field, these publications were collected and collated from a variety of sources: the Hmong Studies Journal, Web of Science, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, and other key scholarly databases, as well as Mark Pfeifer’s bibliographies on Hmong Studies. This index differs from Pfeifer’s bibliographies in that it includes book reviews, reports and conference presentations/proceedings. In this vein, the expansion of item types in this index more accurately reflects the Hmong Studies scholarship information ecosystem. At the same time, because I collected citations from databases that index a variety of journals, naturally more peer-reviewed articles are included in my index compared to Pfeifer’s bibliographies. Finally, this index differs from Pfeifer’s bibliographies in that I took the time to review and note each item for its language composition. This would be useful in many ways, especially to HMoob language speakers, learners, and researchers.

Hmong Studies Citations was collated in an effort to study the ways that imperialism and white supremacy manifest in Hmong Studies. The findings of this study, titled “Loosening the Grip of Imperialism and White Supremacy in Hmong Studies: The Role of Area Studies Librarianship,” will be published in a Library Juice Press edited volume on decolonizing area studies (forthcoming). In this study, by examining prolific authors and journals, the racial composition of authors, and the language composition of Hmong Studies publications, I find that in almost 40 years of scholarship, whiteness, white supremacy, and imperialism continue to pervade Hmong Studies.

It is important to mention that the works collated in this index are US-centric due to the citation collection method: the aforementioned sources are US-based, so naturally its citations are mainly of US-based authors. In a similar vein, it is important to highlight that this index is not exhaustive of the Hmong Studies scholarly record. Hmong Studies, in addition to it being multidisciplinary, is also transnational. For a variety of reasons, including scope, nature, and accessibility, non-U.S.-based authors and their respective publications, especially outside of western academia, were not able to be included in this index.

As previously mentioned, this index grew out of an effort to look at the intersections of race, power, time, and place in Hmong Studies and how these variables have impacted the field, especially as it relates to racial representation of authors, the languages of publications, and types of publications. The historical development and evolution of Hmong Studies have excluded, and in many ways continue to exclude, HMoob people as legitimate knowers and experts of their own subjectivities. In this sense, HMoob folks who are experts on HMoob ways of knowing and being and are not accepted as a part of western academia are not represented in this index, as they ought to be. As a project that aims to look at the nature of power in Hmong Studies, it is important to openly acknowledge this significant shortcoming.
