Abstract:
This study investigated the knowledge level of diabetes among members of the Hmong community of Fresno, California. The sample comprised of 60 adult Hmong students attending English as Second Language classes at two satellite adult school sites. The participants completed a nonrandomized 21-item questionnaire that examined differences in the level of knowledge about diabetes mellitus. The hypotheses were tested through analysis of frequencies and use of Pearson Chi-Square tests with Yates Correction Factor analysis. Data analysis indicated that although there was no significant difference in the level of knowledge about diabetes between men and women, there were significant differences between recent and early Hmong immigrants, different levels of income, and different levels of education. Although certain segments of the Hmong population appeared to have a statistically higher level of knowledge about diabetes, the overall knowledge of the community is still relatively low.
