Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify factors in the successful First-Semester Transition of Hmong-American students enrolled at a large public research institution. A phenomenological case study was developed to identify factors that may contribute to their successful transition from high school to college. The data were extracted from face-to-face interviews with 7 Hmong-American students. The participants were interviewed twice, prior to enrolling and following closely through the end of their first semester on campus. The findings of this study showed the participants were self-motivated and had strong expectations for themselves to pursue higher education, and their parents played critical roles in their education. However, participants demonstrated some lack of confidence and fear of failure in attending college.
