Abstract:
Over the past several decades, there has been a growing recognition of the need for early identification and intervention for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers demonstrating mental health concerns. To meet this need, early childhood professionals in Ramsey County, MN, developed a universal early childhood mental health screening system. In this article, the authors describe how they worked with the creators of a standardized screening too; to adapt it for Hmong and Somali families and how they developed a single point of referral and triage for children with elevated screening scores. The authors also discuss the barriers to an effective screening system and recommend strategies to ensure high-quality services that meet the needs of families with young children.
