Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a parenting class for Hmong refugees. Six parents who participated in the program were compared to a control group (N = 5). Pre- and post-intervention group differences in the areas of communication, interaction, and discipline were compared. Statistical differences were not found, although responses to a Feedback Questionnaire indicated that parents appreciated the class and tried to apply at least one suggestion. Education and school were the most common sources of interaction and communication between parents and children. Parents reported being very satisfied with how close their families were and how well their children respected their authority, but less satisfied with how well they could communicate with their children. The results supported previous research on Hmong family structure and functioning, and the challenges Hmong families experience in the United States. Recommendations for future parenting programs are presented.
