Abstract:
Birds in the Sky, Fish in the Water, by Carole Louise Wolak, c 1996, is the story of two Hmong families who fled Laos for Thailand and then took refuge in the United States in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the Secret War in Laos. When the Hmang were recruited by the CIA to circumvent the movement of communist Vietnamese troops and supplies along the Ho Chi Min Trail in Laos, they were a peaceful group of preliterate subsistence farmers. When the United States withdrew from Laos in 1975, the Hmong faced genocide. This story explores their prewar to postwar lives. It is created from a composite of life experiences told to the author by Hmong Fresno City College students and their families.
