Abstract:
Data obtained via participant observation & interviews, 1985-1989, are drawn on to examine the role of Christian conversion on the early adjustment experience of 43 Laotian Hmong refugee women in Ontario. It is demonstrated that this transition from a traditionally animist & preliterate past did not result in the wholesale abandonment of Hmong practices & beliefs, but rather in a dynamic relationship of custom & innovation. Women in particular turned to the Hmong Christian church (Mennonite) as a resource for empowerment, but also to maintain key Hmong social practices & values. The church proved to be a valuable resource in helping these refugee women cope more effectively with the constraints of gender & minority status. 71 References. Adapted from the source document.
