Abstract:
94 15+ yr old Hmong Ss were measured for self-rated and objective levels of English competency and for several measures of psychosocial adjustment. There were positive correlations between many indices of social adjustment and both measures of English fluency. Ss not receiving welfare had obtained additional education and/or were currently employed and had been at their job for a long period of time tended to show greater English fluency. Married Ss and Ss with more material goods reported high English proficiency that was not verified by the objective fluency test. Acquiring more English did not diminish Hmong traditionality.
