Abstract:
INTRODUCTION Chou Chang and Sai Vang met at Ban Vinai refugee camp in Thailand. They were among thousands of other Hmong refugees who survived the trek from Laos. Moving first through the mountains and then through the jungle by night for nearly a month, they finally swam across the Mekong river to safety. The two young people married and had their first child at the camp. Sai became very sick after childbirth. Her first son died before they were granted asylum.
