Abstract:
An English as a second language/adult literacy teacher's reflections on the uses & functions of literacy in the lives of her students, Hmong immigrants in Philadelphia. Drawing on ethnographic research, Weinstein illustrates the ways in which her students' literacy needs are tied to the context of their communities. This shift from cognitive to social context within literacy studies is deemed important. Suggestions are offered for creating a setting in classrooms that allows teachers to discover more about the role of literacy in their students' lives, & allows students to identify & expand the contexts in which literacy can create meanings for them. 7 Figures, 23 References.
