Abstract:
A series of homicides, bank robberies, business robberies, & aggravated assaults have been committed by Laotian & Hmong gangs in CA. These incidents are recognized as a new public threat & challenge to law enforcement. There are few systematic studies of Laotian/Hmong gangs in current gang literature. Using a case study methodology, this paper intends to provide a preliminary profile of Laotian/Hmong gangs in the US. Their structure, symbolism, assimilation, alliance, criminal activities, mobility, physical appearance, refugee camp syndrome, & naming system are discussed. Findings suggest that social disorganizational theory & strain theory are appropriate integrated approaches for examining the formation of Laotian/Hmong gangs. 3 Tables, 1 Figure, 1 Appendix, 16 References.
