Abstract:
The Hmong population is a growing community in the United States. The Hmong are also a community with an increasing number of health issues, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension and stroke. Many Hmong have been prescribed medications but, unfortunately, there is a high level of nonadherence due to cultural beliefs, language barriers, miscommunication and mistrust. Research shows the Hmong are minimally aware of complications from nontreatment. Although there are interventions targeted towards the general, English-speaking population regarding medication adherence, there are no such interventions for the Hmong community. Furthermore, any educational module targeted towards this population needs to be in audio-visual format since there is a high illiteracy rate. The purpose of this project was to develop a set of clinically and culturally appropriate questions for Hmong individuals to ask their clinicians regarding new medications. The educational tool is a four-minute video in Hmong, educating the viewer on what questions to ask about their medications and why. An anticipated outcome from future widespread use of the video is that there will be improved communication and, thus, medication adherence within the Hmong population.
