Abstract:
Hypertension and compliance with taking antihypertensive medications are major concerns for the elderly Hmong population. This study demonstrates the use of phenomenology theory of understanding each person's own reality and life experiences and provides nurses an understanding of how elderly Hmong perceive their disease states. Understanding the importance of taking antihypertensive medications and knowing the severity of the consequences of inadequately controlled hypertension could lead to compliance with recommendations for taking antihypertensive medications in the elderly Hmong population. Nurses can use this understanding to provide effective and appropriate healthcare and prevent mortality and morbidity in the elderly Hmong population.
