Abstract:
Examined the emergence of English writing in 21 limited-English proficient (LEP) kindergarten Ss, from Spanish, Hmong, Lao, and Cambodian backgrounds. Daily journal writing sessions were videotaped and analyzed during 1 yr. Results indicate that young LEP children learning a written language demonstrate stages of writing development similar to those of native speakers. The study suggests that learners need not be proficient speakers of a 2nd language to benefit from oral and written transactions in that language. Three representative case studies illustrate the progression of literacy development through journal writing. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
