Abstract:
The definition & typology of serial verb constructions (SVCs) are discussed with reference to White Hmong, an Austro-Tai language in which verb concatenation is a crucial part of clause organization. It is argued that, in contrast to the methodology of other researchers, looking at different types of parataxis can give some insight into the nature of SVCs in the narrower sense. The typical form & function of SVCs in White Hmong are considered. Possible motivations for serialization & other types of parataxis are discussed. It is argued that Hmong has a paratactic surface target structure & that SVCs, whether narrowly or broadly defined, are a reflection of this target structure. 37 References. R. Sheffer
