Abstract:
Examined the meaning and experience of menopause among Hmong women. 23 Ss in Australia (aged 20–51+ yrs) were interviewed regarding reproductive health, beliefs and practices related to childbearing, menstruation and menopause. Findings show that Ss viewed menopause as a part of growing old. Although having many children was highly valued, Ss did not see menopause as a negative stage, since they had already borne many children and ensured the continuity of lineage. Ss also associated menopause with the polluted nature of menstruation, and when it ceased a woman became as "clean" as a man. Ss experienced few menopausal symptoms and sought help from mainstream health services when they experienced ill health of any kind. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
