Abstract:
This descriptive correlational study was designed to investigate the somatic complaints experienced by depressed Hmong adults. Depression was measured by the Hmong Adaptation of the Beck Depression Inventory (HABDI). Somatic complaints were identified by the Somatic Symptom Questionnaire designed for this study. Thirty-seven Hmong adults living in central California participated in the study. Demographic data included age, gender, length of time in the United States, and the need to use an interpreter. Chi-square and Pearson product-moment correlation analysis demonstrated a significant relationship between the HABDI score and the subject's need to use an interpreter, presence of physical complaints, and seeking medical treatment for physical complaints. Somatic complaints of headache, backache, and abdominal pain had a positive significant relationship to increasing HABDI scores, as well as seeking health care treatment for headache and dizziness.
