Abstract:
This study examined the academic success rate of Hmong students in North High School, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Data were gathered on academic performance, attendance, behavior, and community involvement including adjudication notices. The data gave insight into how many Hmong students are credit deficient. A profile of a typical credit deficient Hmong student was developed through frequency distribution charts displaying the information gathered. After identifying successful and unsuccessful populations of Hmong students, the study used a case study approach to obtain data on how the schools can change to make Hmong students more successful. A sample of five students from each population, successful and unsuccessful, was interviewed to obtain data on what helped them achieve in school or strategies that they would recommend to help others. School officials, parents, and members of the Hmong community were also asked to provide information about how they feel schools should respond to meet the needs of the Hmong students. This information was presented in dialogue fashion. The answers to questions asked of successful students, unsuccessful students, Hmong adults, and school officials will be used by the Eau Claire Area School District to develop a plan to assist Hmong students in the school community.
