Abstract:
This study evaluated the psychometric characteristics of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) Adapted Hmong Version. The study also examined the relationship between depression scores and demographic variables such as age, sex, length of stay in America, English-speaking ability, and social support. One hundred twenty-three Hmong living in Fresno County, aged 18 to 66, participated in the study. Depressed and nondepressed subjects were administered the BDI Hmong Version. The new measure demonstrated a high coefficient alpha (0.93), test-retest reliability (0.92), and a significant mean scores difference between the nondepressed and the depressed groups. Individual items were distributed evenly and correlated highly with the total depression score. All the demographic variables except length of stay in America and social support were significantly related to depression. The study suggested that quality of social support and years of education seem to play important roles in Hmong depression.
