Abstract:
Intended to help educators better understand the behavior of students from Southeast Asia as a function of culture, the paper provides information on family life. Childrearing attitudes are considered for the infant to toddler (0-3 years) age span and the preschool child (3-5 years). A chart compares child rearing practices in American and Vietnamese, Cambodian, H'Mong, and Laotian cultures. The analysis of cultural influences on family relationships shows Southeast Asian parents to be controlling, restrictive, and protective of their children and the importance of the clan structure in the H'Mong culture. A similar chart compares family relationships across the cultures. Finally, a list of "do's" and "don'ts" for school administrators and classroom teachers completes the paper. (DB)
