Abstract:
It has become a characteristic of US counterinsurgency/counterrevolutionary doctrine for indigenous peoples within the Third World to be manipulated against communism, providing a ready and on-site combatant pool for deployment against progressive movements and governments. Typically executed by the CIA, this line of action has repeatedly resulted in the dislocation, dissolution, decimation and sometimes virtual eradication of indigenous societies. The authors ask 2 questions: why are indigenous people so susceptible to recruitment by US low intensity warfare specialists? And do leftist revolutionary theory and practice promote such alliances? They look at these questions with reference to the h'Mong people of Laos and in more detail the Miskito, Sumo and Rama Indians of Mosquitia in Nicaragua. -after Authors
