Abstract:
Reviews Hmong history, beliefs about health and illness, education practices and values, and family structure. Suggestions for therapists for developing procedures for communication, structuring the test environment, encouraging family participation, and choosing evaluation methods in occupational therapy are included. Trained interpreters provide the most reliable communication between family members and the therapist. Assessments in the home environment are encouraged, and parents are identified as an excellent source of information about the child's current and past functional abilities. Observations of the child's interaction with family members, with objects and toys during play, and during functional daily living activities offer valuable information for intervention. An illustrative case study of a 3-yr-old boy with a seizure disorder is presented. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
