Abstract:
Examined marital attitudes among 70 female and 64 male Hmong immigrants to the US from Laos. Most Ss were between 16 and 30 yrs of age. Ss answered questions about marriage preparation, marriage roles, and divorce. Results show that, in comparison to traditional Laotian marital attitudes, Ss' attitudes had experienced some change as a result of their dramatic cultural transformation. Aspects that underwent significant change included those regarding polygynous marriages, bride price, age at marriage, and general views on equality within marriage. However, responses to specific statements still reflected a strongly male-dominated society, and attitudes concerning the proper roles of husbands and wives had changed little. Also, women tended to be more traditional than men. (French & Spanish abstracts) (11 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
