Abstract:
The present study examined parents' perceptions of their children's academic performance in school as well as their own locus of control. To measure parents' accuracy of perception, data were collected from the children's schools regarding grades, retention in grade and special school services currently being received. Two groups of parents participated in this study, 42 Hmong parents and 20 East Indian parents. Locus of Control, participation in regular education or special education, and student grades served as dependent measures. The locus of control measure was not found reliable with either ethnic group. A factor analysis was completed to analyze the data. A separate locus of control measure sensitive to each ethnic group may be necessary. Additional data revealed parents were not found either to be accurate reporters of their children's performance in school or to understand the school services their children received.
