Abstract:
A history & annotated bibliography of research on minority languages of China focuses on works by Chinese scholars published since 1980; principal attention is given to two monograph series. (1) The series Zhongguo Shaoshu Minzu Yuyan Jianzhi Congshu (Concise Descriptions of China's Minority Languages) yielded 60 titles between 1980 & 1987, of which 57 are listed by language family with commentary clarifying dialect coverage. (2) A new series begun in 1997 is titled Zhongguo Xinfaxian Yuyan Yanjiu Congshu (Collection of Studies on Newly Discovered Languages in China); the first 25 volumes under this title (1997-2005) are listed in chronological order with extensive commentary providing demographic & classificatory information on the language or dialect described in each monograph.
