Abstract:
Following an earlier article (see abstract 9507980) exploring two versions of the Hmong-American New Year & how dress is used by Hmong Americans to make sense of their position between the cultural world of the past & contemporary US culture, focus here is on the transmission & reconstruction of female gender roles in the US context as expressd through women's headdresses worn to the Hmong American New Year celebration. Data were obtained via fieldwork conducted 1987-1990 among the Hmong in the St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN, area. Both uses of dress arose out of attempts to reconcile the cultural life of the past with their lives in the US; both are expressed visually through the dressed & evaluated body within the context of the Hmong New Year celebration. 4 Figures, 28 References.
