Abstract:
The purpose of this narrative inquiry research study is to reconstruct my personal and professional identity through a study of my experiences as a Hmong immigrant growing up in the United States. I answer questions about my identity and reconstruct my identity through narrative inquiry. Hermeneutic theory supports my inquiry about my and my parents' Hmong-American experiences and leads me to incorporate collective meaning making in the process of reconstructing my identity. The results of this study indicate that my personal and professional identities are very much affected by my experiences of acculturation, assimilation, and enculturation. I gain greater understanding of my and my parents' past and find links between our experiences and my teacher identity. Implications for multi-cultural education and anti-racist pedagogy in teacher education are discussed.
