Abstract:
This chapter synthesizes the few available, recently published materials about the Hmong, including information accessible through Internet sources. The chapter leads off with a brief history of Hmong migration to the United States, followed by examples of ways that the group has adapted to life and circumstances in the United States. A subsequent section addresses problems and issues faced by Hmong people today. The resilience and fortitude of the Hmong community is highlighted in the section on cultural values and community strengths, which also addresses the salience of applying a culturally competent and strengths-based approach to assessment. The unique combination and application of indigenous and Western interventions are described in a later section, with a final section addressing the principles of practice indicated by the review of the literature on which this chapter is based.
