Abstract:
Presents the case of a 7-yr-old Hmong refugee who, upon arriving in the US, exhibited a variety of disruptive behaviors at his monolingual (English-speaking) school. A home visit and psychological and medical examinations revealed the source of the S's problem: a language-handicap and hearing loss. An individualized education plan of classes with bilingual aide assistance enabled the S to make considerable progress. The case is interpreted in terms of the characteristics of the Hmong language, the S's background, and the Hmong cultural context and its implications for educators.
