Abstract:
This chapter will highlight the variation in educational achievement and attainment across various Asian American ethnic groups. The central focus will be on the educational experiences of the Hmong, a Southeast Asian ethnic group that has experienced considerable difficulty in U.S. schools. Particular attention will be paid to the cultural and structural barriers that Hmong American students face in their pursuit of education. Furthermore, the paper will reveal the way the model minority stereotype negatively affects Asian American students who struggle in school. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a discussion regarding implications and recommendations for policy and practice. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)
