Abstract:
The goal of this research was to study the barriers or perceived barriers that prevent the Hmong of Fresno, California, from accessing Western healthcare services. The problems Hmong face in accessing healthcare services in Fresno are multiple: an inability to speak English, cultural differences, lack of financial resources, and systemic barriers. This study examined three factors: age, gender, and length of residence in the United States. In this research, Andersen's (1968, 1995) Behavioral Model was used as the basis for a questionnaire. A total of 163 participants were surveyed at the annual Hmong New Year celebration (December 26, 1998, to January 3, 1999) in Fresno, California. Pearson Chi-Square with Yates Correction Factor analysis revealed no significant association between age, gender, or length of residence in the United States and ability to access Western healthcare services. However, significant associations in subvariables of these three factors were found.
