Abstract:
Approximately 60,000 Hmong, a group who are from the mountains of Laos, have resettled in the United States during the past 20 years. An ethnographic study examined the spiritual beliefs and health care practices of immigrant Hmong families living in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Because spiritual beliefs are so vital in the daily lives of Hmong families, and no scientific studies have been found which investigate Hmong acculturation related to spiritual beliefs, the results of this study will be valuable to family scholars in various settings. Data were gathered by ten Hmong research assistants who conducted face-to-face interviews concerning spiritual beliefs with 100 Hmong families in the Fall of 1999. Core concepts examined were use of animism, shamanism, and soul calling across generations. [English Abstract] (Copyright applies to all Abstracts.)
