Abstract:
Parents of 25 Hmong junior high school students were interviewed to gain information regarding their involvement in their children's education. The findings indicated that limited proficiency in the English language kept the parents from helping their children with school work and made them feel uncomfortable in the school setting. The topics that the parents stated they would most like to discuss with school personnel tended to focus on social/behavioral concerns. The majority of the parents expressed a positive relationship with the school, found current practices helpful, and had not felt stress related to their children's education. However, parent responses indicated a great need and desire for access to additional school and community resources. Results further suggested that the Hmong parents would like to expand their involvement in their children's education, but need support from the school to meet that goal.
