Abstract:
The article discusses the dynamics of ethnic identities during war and exile. The article focuses on the Second Indochina War in Laos and how the creation of ethnic identities in relation to militias reflected local dynamics and divisions. The author looks at the identification of Iu Mien peoples in relation to militia leader Chao La. The potential of warfare and violence to define ethnic identities is examined. The author addresses cultural factors in ethnicized and militarized social life. The article also discusses the impact of the Second Indochina War and the Hmong people of Asia.
