Abstract:
Explores social support & life satisfaction of Hmong women in the postpartum period, drawing on semistructured interview data from 52 childbearing Hmong women in north-central & northeastern WI. Analysis via the sensitization method indicated that respondents received support from relatives, many of whom lived in the home with them. Fathers were the primary source of support, helping with infant care & assisting with child care tasks. A great deal of support in child care was also received from their mothers, mothers-in-law, & other relatives. Life satisfaction depended on the length of stay in the US & was generally related to education, employment, independence in self-care, a desire for a smaller family, & access to existing resources for child care. 1 Table, 48 References.
