Abstract:
This article describes the MELD program, a parenting education and support project. Specialized groups are offered for young mothers, mothers of children aged 3-5 years, young fathers, parents of children with special needs, parents who are deaf or hearing-impaired, Latino and Hispanic parents, Hmong parents, and new parents. Goals are to reduce family isolation; teach parents about child development; and improve problem-solving skills. Although the group curriculum is specific to each target population, all groups share common characteristics: facilitation by parents with experiences similar to parents in the group; long-term duration; integration of education and support; discussions that meet the needs of the group, parent, and child; focus on strengths; emphasis on problem-solving; and volunteer training and support. Evaluations have found MELD program groups to be effective in supporting and educating parents. The article reviews recruitment and training of peer facilitators and provides recommendations for program replication. 10 references (Copyright applies to all Abstracts.)
