Abstract:
The course of an on-site collaboration between Hawkins as researcher & Legler, a kindergarten teacher, is described from 1999 to the present. The student population is equally divided among middle-class Anglos, African Americans, & speakers of foreign languages, in this case Spanish & Hmong; it was decided to focus primarily on the need to structure class activities to foster the development of multiple literacies development through social interaction & educational activities geared to students' experience, identifying language skills students would need for academic success in language arts & science. Research currently addresses three components of home-school connections: home visits by the team, homework for parent-student collaboration, & involvement of parents in the classroom. 12 References.
