Abstract:
The discovery of the French industrial world by Hmong refugees who arrived from Laos in 1975 is chronicled. It is shown how their recruitment as unskilled workers modified their work image, producing an intraethnic socioprofessional equalization & an interethnic leveling in comparison with other populations in their original society. Analysis of several other socioethnic & historical characteristics of these refugees reveals how this process was more complex than mere proletarianization & affected their overall integration into French society. 1 Table.
