Abstract:
Fleeing their homelands for a safer future in the United States, both Hmong and Somali refugees find themselves fighting to preserve their culture and traditions. Interviews with Hmong and Somali families living in Minnesota provide insights into how living in mainstream residential environments can suppress non-western religious practices and cultural expressions tied to religion, such as community connections and dress. Experiencing daily difficulties threatens the cultural identity of these families and creates stress in their lives. The findings reinforce the need to develop culturally sensitive housing designs and policies that support and foster diversity in ways of living and well-being.
