Abstract:
Chapter 3 links gay and lesbi awareness to the mass media or at least the emergence of gay and lesbi voices in the mass media commencing in the 1980s, albeit with little reporting as to homosexual activity in the West, raising the question as to just how Indonesian gay and lesbis appropriated Western thinking and just how they portray themselves as indigenous. A final chapter offers a restatement of just how Hmong women empower themselves in a society where sexual asymmetry has been much remarked upon and where women's role alongside men is to be private and silent.
