Abstract:
Mainland Southeast Asia is marked by a great diversity of ethnic groups, although its population is much more homogeneous than that of peninsular Southeast Asia. In mainland Southeast Asia state borders do not coincide with areas of settlement of ethnic groups. Karen, Akha, Hmong or Yao, for example, live in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and in the border provinces of the Chinese side. The article introduces the main ethnic groups of mainland Southeast Asia and elaborates further on the relationship between the major ethnic groups and ethnic minorities from a historical perspective.
