Abstract:
In the mid-1980's Hmong refugees in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, began to make portions of quilts for the Amish quilt market. Their traditional applique skills learned in Thailand were easily put to use by Mennonite and Amish entrepreneurs, although the patterns used were not traditional Hmong images. Hmong women did not open quilt shops as retailers, except in a few isolated instances.
