Abstract:
Provided is an overview of Australian missionary M. H. Hutton's work in developing a written record of the Ge (Hmong) language. By 1933 Hutton was able to adequately represent Ge in writing using the Chinese National Phonetic Script & the same spelling principles as used earlier for Hmu. Based on Hutton's unpublished manuscript dictionary, Wang Fushi's comparative vocabulary encompassing 600 words in nine dialects of Miao, & field notes from Ni Gui & Li Yongsui (1959), a brief description of the language is provided. Two mutually intelligible vernacular forms are identified, the first from Chong'an commune & the second spoken in Lushan & Shibing. A total of six tones are identified, & it is noted that some uncertainty exists in regard to words appearing in tone sandhi environments. 1 Appendix, 5 References. R. Meyer
