Abstract:
An examination of the Hmong resettlement process, offering a history of Laos, exodus to Thailand, & subsequent resettlement in the US. The system of Hmong kinship & the diverse religious beliefs of this group are examined. Failure to move from swidden agriculture to farming has prompted many Hmong to take up vocational training. Secondary empirical data from St. Paul, MN, show the educational accomplishments of Hmong youth comparable to the general population, along with the importance of marriage & procreation, home ownership, & community. The Hmong have successfully created national organizations to provide services for their refugees. Nazli Kibria's study (1994 [see abstract 9407164]) of Vietnamese adaptation in Philadelphia, PA, is modified to suggest a movement beyond the residence group as the unit of refugee study & to offer skepticism on the collectivism vs individualism argument so prevalent in cross-cultural research. 3 Tables, 70 References.
