Abstract:
Preliminary findings are presented of the first wave of a longitudinal survey of adolescent vocational acculturation & its accompanying stresses in the Hmong refugee community of St. Paul, Minn. The analysis is based on data collected from 104 Hmong ninth-graders & 111 Hmong parents, & from 1,001 non-Hmong adolescents & 1,575 of their parents. Aggregate comparisons of Hmong & non-Hmong adolescents' family, school, & work experiences are reported, along with information concerning their parents' experiences & aspirations. Despite their profound cultural differences & great SE disadvantages, the Hmong adolescents appear to be doing well in school. They report close & communicative relationships with their parents, & parents themselves have high aspirations for their children.
