Abstract:
One hundred and fifty Southeast Asian refugee living in Des Moines metropolitan area were interviewed regarding their felt needs in the areas of education, employment and health. The five ethnic backgrounds represented in the study were Vietnamese, Laotians, Hmong, Tai Dam and the Cambodians. English language instruction emerged as the most desired need as expressed by these women. Education and employment emerged as the second most felt needs of the women. Lack of transportation ranked fourth, and, (better) medical services ranked as fifth most significant need as expressed by these women. By ethnic background, Vietnamese women appeared to have adjusted better and seemed to have fewer needs when compared to the other four groups.
