Abstract:
Reviews the book, Up against whiteness: Race, school, and immigrant youth by S. Lee (2005). This book is an important contribution to both studies of race and urban education in general and to specific studies of Hmong American educational experiences. In the book, traditional and Americanized Hmong American students negotiate the terrain of race within their school. The book is an important contribution to studies of immigrant youth of color. In this book, the author exposes the cultural, racial, gendered, and economic barriers that Hmong American students face and names the tensions these barriers present within families and communities for immigrants of color.
