Abstract:
Examines the causes & characteristics of a series of migrations of the Hmong (or Miao, a name given to non-Han peoples in the southwest People's Republic of China), a mountain tribe estimated to be the most recent migrants in the southern region of the Southeast Asian Massif, into upper Indochina from southwest China from ancient times to the present. Territories from which the Miao/Hmong came & where they settled throughout southeast Asia are discussed, based on a comprehensive survey of early historical sources in both French & English. More recent developments include the migration of Hmong people to Thailand. This economically developed country resigned itself to the to the presence of the Hmong, because they are attracting both tourists & academic researchers. 149 References. M. Grounds
