Abstract:
This study investigated the relationships among measures of phonemic awareness and language proficiency assessments for at-risk high school students of three language backgrounds. Subjects were 86 high school sophomores, Title 1 participants, and the first college-bound members of their individual families. Seventy-one subjects represented three major language groups: English, Spanish, and Hmong. Moderate positive correlations were found between some measures of phonemic awareness and the other language assessments (standardized test scores and an academic language performance assessment). Native English and Spanish speakers scored significantly higher than Hmong on several of the subtests. The results show that adolescents with low-level English proficiency also have low phonemic awareness scores.
